Counselor's Corner

My name is Eugenia Kathleen Burnett, but my friends and colleagues know me as Kathleen. I am the new Early High School counselor and I’m so excited to be here.  I have a B.A. in EngliKathleen Burnettsh from UCLA, a Master of Arts in English, and a teaching certification from Sul Ross in Alpine, my hometown. I also earned my Doctor of Jurisprudence from Texas Tech School of Law, after which, I practiced law for about 15 years. However, after marrying my husband, Sammy Burnett, who was coaching at the time, I decided to follow my passion for teaching. Overall, I taught English and dual credit composition for 10 years. High school students are at a wonderful stage in life, full of opportunity and excitement. I enjoyed helping students, not only in the classroom, but with such things as college applications and post secondary programs, as well as life, in general. That inspired me to pursue school counseling. I earned my Master of Science in Professional School Counseling from Angelo State University. My husband and I have 4 children, Kennedy Burnett, who lives in Minnesota, Christian DeHart, who is an Army veteran from the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Tatum DeHart, and Leighton Burnett. Both Christian and Tatum are students at TCU in Fort Worth and are actively involved in Greek life- Go Frogs!   Christian is majoring in finance with a focus in real estate. Tatum is a sports broadcasting/journalism major.  Leighton will be an 8th grader at Early Middle School, and she loves volleyball. As your school counselor, I am committed to empowering students with the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to thrive in high school and beyond. I want to build partnerships with students and their families so that we can develop clear and meaningful plans for life after high school. Hook ‘em Horns.
